Sheffield Live!

Sheffield live! is an independent radio station, so this means it operates in a different way.
It is a community radio station. Small-scale, not for profit, operating for the good of the members of the public and social gain.
Must provide a service for underserved groups. Facilitate discussion and expression of opinion within the community served. They must provide education or training to people who aren't employed by the station. It must also strengthen the community served.
The company that run sheffield live! are Commedia Sheffield Ltd.
It was awarded a licence because it followed the regulations of the Broadcasting Act (1990) and the Community Radio Order (2004)
A community radio station can only operate as such if its 'ethos' and output do not cross over with the main commercial channels or BBC output in the area to reach its target listenership.
32, 000 adults tune in to Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM every week.
There music output of Sheffield Live! comprises of a very diverse mix, such as jungle, reggae, Asian pop, latin, dance etc.
There funding comes through public funding, grants, donor income, National Lottery funding or charities. They can also ask for money from Ofcom.

BBC Radio Sheffield Project Work

Who is the main target audience for BBC radio sheffield?
- The targeted audience is mainly 50 year olds and older who like to interact with the radio station and who aren't well served elsewhere.

What is their audience reach?
- It is roughly about 7.2 million people that listen to the radio station.

How do we know they are a PSB broadcaster from their content and shows?
- Steve Bailey, he runs a show on the news, weather, sports etc. Also Rony Robinson, he does a show that chats about the top stories from where you live, plus he does a forum at midday. Finally Paulette Edwards brings us lifestyle, chat and great music. These shows that this is a PSB because it is to benefit the the listeners.

How does BBC Radio Sheffield conform to the BBC Brand?
- Because they are a PSB which they have to be if they are part of the BBC brand. They also follow all the rules and have the BBC logo to make it confom to it.

How can audiences receive BBC Radio Sheffield shows?
- Through the internet, through the radio, through TV and through DAB.

National Readership Survey (NRS)
They collate information about what people read and social backgrounds.
They categorise people by wealth, class and job role

A, B and C1's have the most Disposable income (have the most money to spend) so they are targeted the most.
It is important for media producers to target ABC1's because they have the most disposable income which is good for advertisers.

Baur reaches 20 million people in the UK, there are only 62, 641, 000 people in the UK, that is just under a third of the country that gets reached by Bauer
53% of Bauer's audience are ABC1's.
Over half of Bauer's radio listeners are ABC1's
Bauers main commercial competitors is Capital FM who are owned by Global Media which are a big radio company.
The other main competitor is BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) they formed in 1927 they are a public service broadcaster. They HAVE to make content that will inform, educate and entertain.
